PostSubject: To beat on...   Wed Sep 17, 2008 11:13 pm

I'm reaching the end of the first translation I'm trying to do (you know, practice makes perfect Embarassed ), and I'd forgotten how bloody difficult versions are!!!! affraid
Anyway, I'm having some problems rendering this last sentence in French (it's the last page of the Great Gatsby):

And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

My (poor) translation:
Ainsi nous luttons (pour avancer?), tels des bateaux à contre-courant, ramenés sans cesse en arrière, dans le passé.

I'm not very happy with my translation of "beat on". Do you see any other way of putting it?

Ma trad:

Ainsi nous continuons à lutter, tels des bateaux à contre-courant, sans cesse ramenés vers le passé.

Choix de trad:

beat on: continuer à lutter
ramener pour borne back (le 'r' de ramener traduit déjà le 'back' (re-amener) donc pas de sur-traduction)
Into the past: vers le passé (direction, pas 'dans')

edi: did you have a look at the rest of the page (if you have the book, of course)? it looks easy, but some parts are devilishly hard!!

Well... your translation was already quite good, as a matter of fact I only improved one or two things that I thought needed to be changed.
And my translation is not necessarily correct...

Other advice needed!!!

John, how do you know things like \"pas de surtraduction\", and the [r] of \"ramener\"? Did you take methodology classes or were you just born knowing them? Razz

Tangerine, last page of the Great Gatsby. Surely you have it? Smile
If you don't, I'd b glad to give you the entire text plus my translation, for you to pore over it and castigate me for any mistakes!! bounce

Reply above your remark!! Shocked
(weird, that system of asking one whether one wants to change one's message when somebody else has jumped into the thread before one has finished one's answer)

I was of course born knowing those things.

No I've had very good translation teachers and a few books helped me out a couple of times...
